Chaplin Elementary School is committed to providing all our students with high-quality and engaging lessons across the curricula that ensure that all Chaplin students have access to equitable educational opportunities and succeed within a culture of high expectations. CES defines curriculum as the “road map” or “guideline” that enables the learner to acquire essential knowledge and skills. Our curricula are guided by and aligned to the content standards adopted by the Connecticut Board of Education, uses high-quality materials, and assessments that assist in developing the skills in our portrait of a learner.
Chaplin teachers plan and sequence instruction with purpose. Using the framework of Understanding by Design and knowing our students, teachers deliberately plan and sequence lessons that provide the proper proportions of surface-level thinking and deep-level thinking. By offering the appropriate level of challenge and support for students, they can attain the challenges set before them.
Using John Hattie’s study, Visible Learning, teachers apply the influences that have positive student impact on achievement. Our students must trust that errors are welcome opportunities to learn. With all of this in mind, teachers are committed to providing rigorous learning opportunities that allow the students to engage in rough draft thinking on their journey to mastery of knowledge and skills.
All students receive Tier 1 instruction with core materials. Supplemental materials are used during small group instruction. With all of this in place, there will still be students who need more time and opportunities for mastery. Tiers 2 and 3 offer different levels of intervention with concentrated, deliberate instruction and practice in areas that need to be strengthened to close existing gaps.
As equal partners, the educators at CES and our CES families must work together to support our students’ learning and growth. We must have trust that our teachers and families will do what is needed for them to thrive in our classrooms. We want our families actively engaged in their child’s learning through conferencing with teachers throughout the school year and joining us during our evening family engagement night activities.
